wha happened?

For those of you who don't know, I missed all of September because I was in the hospital with Legionnaire's disease. It was pretty serious, and at first, I was in bad shape. But after two + weeks in UM hospital, I seem to be ok now! I may have some long term issues, but the main thing is I ain't dead, and I have a large number of people to thank. First, I have to give up a lot of love to Camie; she's been an absolute trooper through this crisis, and the master of the house of Fluff. I simply can't believe the energy that flows through this crazy Interweb, and comes back to me through many amazing people, notably Amba, Trooper York, Darcy, Chickelit, Freeman... if I forgot anybody by name you definitely get the Oscar thanks!

I was looking through some of my older posts here, and I forgot how much fun this whole blog has been for going on 6 years now. I'll be trying to get back to that sense of fun here and I'm working on a writing project (with Amba's prodding!) which I'll hammering away at. Am I really a writer? I may need to embrace this, mind and heart.

Ron, another thing I thought of when I heard you had Legionnaire's (btw, how's that local fame coming?) was that I recalled that when the disease first surfaced in the '70's, it was erroneously blamed on a substance called nickel tetracarbonyl, a molecule nicknamed "liquid death" and metal with wings" because if inhaled it nickel-plates the insides of your lungs and poisons you with carbon monoxide. It turned out that Ni(CO)4 had about as much to do with Legionaire's as being Haitian had to do with AIDS, and I can't seem to find a single medical article about it.

Nickel tetracarbonyl, while a liquid at room temperature, boils at slightly above. It's discoverer, Ludwig Mond, founded an industry on the process for refining nickel, and all those Pruis-driving environmental wackos really owe Mond a favor (nickel is an important component of the Pruis battery system).

Just FYI

Dude I thought Legionaire's disease was where you had to wear a fez and ride one of those tiny motorcycles in a parade. I didn't realize it was so serious.

Thank God you made it back.
